Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
SEO – An introduction
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines.
SEO can be divided in two possible methods: search engine optimization via un-paid (‘natural’ / ‘algorithmic’) search results and search engine marketing (SEM) which uses paid listings.
SEO techniques are furthermore classified into two broad categories: techniques that search engine companies recommend as part of good web site design and those techniques that search engines do not approve of, often referred to as ‘spamdexing’.
Some industry commentators classify these methods, and the practitioners who employ them, as either ‘white hat SEO’ or ‘black hat SEO’.
‘White hats’ tend to produce results that last a long time, whereas ‘black hats’ anticipate that their sites will eventually be banned once the search engines discover what they are doing
Search engines – can’t do without
In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive through the search engine results. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.
As an internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website may involve editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines. Promoting a site to increase the number of back links, or inbound links, is another SEO tactic.
Effective SEO requires changes to the source code of a web site, therefore SEO tactics need to be incorporated into the design and development of a web site. Not just the overall web site structure, but also integrated elements like menus, content management systems, images, videos, shopping carts, and other elements have to be optimized for the purpose of search engine exposure.

Deciding to optimize your website for indexing by search engines is a big decision that can potentially improve your site, loading speed and improve ranking in search listings.
But if not done properly, it can also inflict damage to your site and even cause blacklisting by the major search engines, so your site will not be listed at all in the search results.
Though a website can be search engine optimized after production, the best results are gained if SEO is applied right from the start of the production. For older websites, it might be even more cost-effective as well to create a completely new web site according to SEO standards than reworking an old website according to the latest standard in SEO techniques.
