SasaHivi Media has today launched a showcasing website of Contemporary Art in Kenya.
The website is the final release in a series about the best of Contemporary Art in Kenya, which started of as a juried artist' competition and resulted in the production of a exhibition, a book, a CD-ROM and finally this website. The exhibition was taking place in 2006, the book was launched in 2007 and the CD-ROM in 2008. The whole project gives now in various media a good overview of the current Contemporary Art scene in Kenya. As much as the project gives an overview of the best of Kenyan Contemporary culture, the website as well is a state of the art piece, fully multimedia, inclusive of Kenyan music playing in the background.
SasaHivi Media produced the different Multimedia products for and in close cooperation with the Alliance Française de Nairobi and the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi, institutions situated within 50 metres proximity of each other in the heart of Nairobi, have over the years largely contributed to the promotion of Kenyan Arts and continue to support and expose Kenyan artists in all spheres.
With the support of Kuona Trust and the Department of Culture of the Government of Kenya, the juried exhibition of Contemporary Art in Kenya, showcased the best of 21st century contemporary art and recognized excellence and achievement in various categories including paintings, sculptures, mixed media and new media art. Using the medium of urban art, artists were invited to present proposals on the special category ‘Symbolink’ created to mark a link between the Alliance Française and the Goethe-Institut.
The juried competition was launched in December 2005 and entries closed on 31st January 2006. 450 submissions were received on close of deadline, representing the work of over 180 artists. Through a process of elimination of the jury selected artworks for the exhibition according to the following criteria: Originality (content/subject matter/plagiarism), Presentation, Aesthetics/pictorial unity and Skill of handling medium. Over a period of three sessions, the jury selected 112 artworks by 80 artists in the categories paintings, sculptures and mixed media art. The Alliance Française de Nairobi and the Goethe-Institut in Nairobi selected 10 artworks for the Symbolink category.
The winners of the several categories received cash awards and the most promising mal and female artists were awarded Kuona Arts Trust Residencies.
